Week 2 - The Banana Trade

The Banana Trade

Questions to consider:

Where do bananas grow?
Why do they grow there?
Do they grow in Ireland?
Who harvests the bananas?
How do the bananas get to our local supermarkets?
Are all bananas traded in the same manner by the same people?

What to do...

  1. Aim to enhance your knowledge on the trading of bananas using the following search engine, consider the questions above when searching the web: www.kidrex.org
  2. In our pairs use the following website to trace the journey of a batch of bananas from a place where they originally grow to the local supermarket, consider the modes of transport, the people involved and the cost at each stage: www.maps.google.com
  3. In the same pairs, one of you will describe the journey he believes a batch of bananas will taken in order to reach our local supermarket while your partner draws the route you describe. Then swap roles.

Our banana trade game:

Our class is going to be split into groups of threes or fours. Each group will be given the name of a country and certain equipment e.g. scissors, protractors, paper, coloured paper. The aim of the game will be to make as much money as possible for your country. A certain cut out shape will correspond to a value of money, this will be outlined on the board for all to see. The groups must work out how will make there money as the different groups/countries will be given different materials.

Early finishers: Add a key to your maps of the banana journey so that people will better understand it, also add some colour to improve it also.
